December 15, 2014: Today Rotary welcomed Laura Weymer, Resource Development Associate for the United Way.
Ms. Weymer moved to the Mahoning Valley from Columbus, first working for the YMCA before joining United Way. She says that she enjoys being a part of the “good”, since the media focuses on the bad.
Laura’s talk centered around a shifting strategy of the organization to become more focused, and to better inform the public of their efforts.
Some of the highlights she mentioned:
1200 United Ways in the nation. More than 88 in OH (more than the counties). But not a lot of people actually know what they do in the community.
Education, Income and Health is now the focus.
Dolly Parton Imagination Library program. Every month until age 5, kids get book mailed to them. 3200 children enrolled so far in Mahoning County.
“Family Wise” (it’s also an App). Save on prescriptions.
Free Vitamins for Kids (5-12) through Hometown Pharmacy.
88 cents per Dollar go to the community. Do a lot of programs with other agencies.
At one point, the United Way supported 34 agencies and 70 programs. They are now down to 29 agencies and 50-55 programs…as they continue to try and focus efforts.
